Stage Structure and Purpose
The FTMO challenge is the first of two stages. Upon successful completion, participants enter Verification. Completion of both stages grants access to an FTMO Account, enabling potential profit withdrawal based on trading performance.
Detailed Trading Requirements
- Minimum Trading Days: A minimum of four days with trade initiation required; non-consecutive days are acceptable.
- Profit Target: A 10% gain over the starting account balance throughout the Challenge period.
- Maximum Daily Loss: Losses must not exceed 5% of the initial capital in a single calendar day, including floating and realized positions.
- Maximum Loss: Overall drawdown is capped at 10% of starting capital.
Simulated Trading Platform
Traders operate in a demo environment, but with live price feeds, trading fees, spreads, and market behaviour designed to align with actual trading conditions. Trades are executed through widely-used platforms such as MetaTrader 4/5, cTrader, or DXtrade.
Account Selection and Features
Traders may choose an account size from preset tiers (often up to $200,000) and select between Classic (restricts overnight or weekend holding, offers higher leverage) and Swing account types (allows extended holds but at lower leverage).
Emphasis on Risk Control
Key to passing the Challenge is rigorous risk control. Traders must adhere to both daily and overall drawdown limits, understand time zone implications, and maintain prudent use of stop losses to prevent infractions due to slippage or market volatility.

FTMO offers educational materials, the Mentor App, performance analytics, and access to performance coaching, designed to improve strategy consistency, discipline, and execution quality.
Advancement and Financial Incentives
Successful traders move to Verification, which carries similar rules but a lower profit target (typically 5%). Passing this phase grants FTMO Trader status, eligibility for profit splits of up to 90%, and refund of the initial Challenge fee upon first payout.
